Sacha Inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.)

Sacha Inchi or Inca Peanut is a plant that grows in the Peruvian Amazon, and known by natives of the area by thousands of years. Pre-Inca and Inca cultures used it; as it is proved by ceramic pottery (huacos) graphics found in different tombs of the Mochica and Chimu cultures. Sacha Inchi grows at about 80 to 1800 MSL. Its fruits are capsules about 3 to 5cm in diameter. Usually Sacha Inchi fruits present four lobules, but some of them present five to seven lobules.

The Sacha Inchi seeds are found inside these capsule lobules. These seeds are about 15 to 20mm width and 7 to 8mm thick. The weight of the seeds vary from 0.8 gr to 1.4 gr.

In the Sacha Inchi seeds are found the cotyledon in the shape of nuts, covered by a white thin layer, the nut is from where the raw material for the oil is extracted.

These seeds contain about 49% to 54% of oil. The composition of the seeds is around 35% skin/peal, and 65% of nut. 

One of the first scientific sources to mention Sacha Inchi was back in the 1980 by Cornell University. It was demonstrated that the Sacha Inchi seeds had a hight content of proteins (33%) and oils (49%)

Sacha Inchi oils are ideal for the daily diet of kids, teenagers, and adults as well. It helps in the recovery of sick people, and is specially good for third age people diets.
