Huamanpinta is used for its diuretic properties, antiseptic action, as an anti-hemorrhagic to dissolve kidney stones and as an anti-inflammatory of the urinary tract.

The Huamanpinta is a South American plant: a bush that grows in rocky places, in the high elevations of the continent, from 2,650 to 4,000 feet above sea level. It flowers in July, and is widely seen in the central Andean provinces, particularly in Junin, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Ancash.

Preliminary studies of its active ingredients have revealed the presence of fixed alkaloids, glucosides, glucoresins, flavonoides and tannins; carbohydrates and some metals, particularly iron. Possibly the presence of the glucosides, among the metabolites of the Huamanpinta are those responsible for anti-febrifuge properties, as well as the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties popular medicine attributes to this species. Likewise, the flavonoides are widely recognized by their effectiveness in rebuilding capillaries, as well as coronary artery dilators, anti spasmodic action, colorectic properties, and diuretic functions. It also acts as a capillary hemostat in different abrasions of the skin; it stimulates wound healing and controls the diarrheas by its astringent action.

The parts of the Huamanpinta plant that are used for medicinal purposes are the shafts and leaves.
